What is your favorite book?
I love the poetry of Billy Collins, especially his book, Picnic, Lightning. He has a very dry and witty sense of humor, and I think that students can relate to his work. My favorite poems are the ones that characterize small details in every day life. I also enjoy his work knowing that he was a professor at Lehman College, right here in the Bronx!
What is your favorite lesson?
My favorite lesson includes students teaching one another. Students realize that they really understand a concept if they can break it down and teach it to someone else.
What is your favorite school trip?
I had the wonderful experience of taking my 7th grade dance students to the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre last year. They took a Horton technique class and toured the world-class facility. My students were very impressed by the live percussionist and the gigantic dance studios. We are excited to go again this year.
What is your favorite tradition at your school?
Every January our school hosts a Winter Arts Festival, where students can showcase their skills in dance, vocal music, instrumental music, visual art, and theatre. The entire school gets excited about this student-produced show. Everything is done by the students, from the lighting, to being stage manager and hosting!
Name the school supply you can’t live without.
I like to use a lot of chart paper, but this year I am trying to “go green” and use the Smartboard more.
My favorite quote from a student:
Student #1 “Ms. Sheppard, why don’t you have any kids?”
Student #2 “Duh. She’s too busy with us!”
