Exciting News! Our Lego Robotics Team is competing in this year's lego robotic challenge, Climate Connections.  The team started right in their own backyard exploring the Freshkills Landfill.  They decided that they were going to investigate methane gas.  The greenhouse gases became their focus. The research team chose China as an alternate location with similar issues surrounding the greenhouse gases.  Information on the subject was limited through the internet so the team developed a survey and sent it out to Americans who had traveled abroad. Survey participants included emmy award winning sports producer, Steve Hollander, who spent two months in Beijing at the 2008 Olympics.  Through first person accounts as well as photos, the team amassed quite a bit of information. Back at home the team hosted Mark Bigelow of the Staten Island Compost Project and they completed Composting 101.  They also began an in-school compost project based on all the information Mr. Bigelow provided.  The team traveled to the JCC in Staten Island, The Berkinow Center, to help celebrate Tu B'Shvat, Israeli Earth Day, to kick off the early childhood center's composting project.  They brought along Mall-E, (Methane Abstraction Load Lifter Earth Day), their prototype robot .  Her hypothetical goal is to collect methane and transform it into practical fuel for home and auto after she travels through one's backyard.
Mall-E celebrated the Chinese New Year with the Staten Island Chinese School who also participated in their surveys.  Mall- E will be escorting the team to the Jacob Javits Center and hopefully making an appearance at Snug Harbor Cultural Center at this year's Earth Day Celebration.  Mall-E is available for public service activities.
The team, both technical, and research will be attending the Statewide Championships at the Jacob Javits Center on March 7th, 2009. Come out and support your favorite robot!
