MS 202 Academic Policy

ACADEMIC HONESTY

Goddard Middle School students are expected to conduct themselves in accordance with five fundamental values: honesty, trust, fairness, respect and responsibility.   Students are to act so that they are worthy of the trust bestowed upon them by their teachers and peers, conduct themselves honestly, and carry out their responsibilities with honor and fairness.   Cheating, plagiarism and inappropriate collaboration are examples of a breach of academic integrity.

AGENDA BOOKS

Students are expected to come to school prepared to learn.   As with most jobs, a few tools are required each day to help the child succeed.   These are: binders and notebooks, books, paper, writing utensils, calculator and an agendabook.    At the beginning of the school year, the student is encouraged to purchase an agenda book for recordingassignments.   Because the agenda book is such an important tool for success, the teachers monitor its use in all classes.   Parents should also monitor their child’s agenda book and can use it to communicate with the teacher by writing notes or comments.

FIELD TRIPS

Curriculum related field trips are planned and extend the learning environment past the confines of the classroom and school building. At times there is a fee to go on a trip (e.g. museum, aquarium entrance fees, etc), The teacher will send home the information about the trip early so that you have ample time to submit the fee. Parental consent forms must be completed, signed and returned prior to the trip. Students are also to comply with the rules and dress code applicable tothat specific trip.

Thereis no NO VERBAL permission allowed for a school trip.

There may be instances that a child is banned from a trip primarily due to behavioral problems.   Parent teacher contact prior to the trip may be necessary.

Often times, parent chaperons are needed.   Teachers will advise when desired and/or needed.   If you desire to attend, you should contact the teacher directly.   If you need assistance, feel free to contact the parent coordinator.

HOMEWORK POLICY

Homework provides students with the opportunity to extend learning, prepare future class activities, reinforce skills, review content material and work on long term projects.   Homework reinforces and encourages good study habits as well as teaching the student how to budget time and develop personal accountability. Teachers will communicate their practices concerning homework to students and parents.   Students are responsible for obtaining and completing assignments when absent.

We know that students work at different rates as they complete assignments; however, if a student consistently works more than three hours or less than one hour, then the parent is encouraged to contact the teacher. The goal is to make homework a positive support for student achievement.

Some assignments are long range in nature and require planned study time for their completion.   Planned study eliminates the necessity of spending too much time in completing an assignment the day before it is due.

  PHYSICAL EDUCATION

All students are required to dress for gym on their programmed PE days. The student must wear the MS 202 gym shirt, shorts and/or sweats and sneakers.   Sneakers are required footwear in the gym. In the beginning of the school year, your child will be told what gym clothes are necessary and will be given ample time to purchase these items before they are marked unprepared.   You may purchase additional gym clothes any time throughout the school year.

REPORT CARDS

Report cards are issued to students four times throughout the school year.   Report cards will be directly distributed to parents at the two parent teacher conferences. The other two report cards, one in the spring, and the final report in June, are given directly to the students to be brought home.

TEXTBOOKS

The school provides textbooks free of charge to students to use during the school year. Students are required to cover and treat the books with care. All books issued to the student must be returned to the school when requested. If the book(s) is not returned, a fee of $50.00 per book will be charged.   Any student failing to return a book, will lose the right to new books until the old ones are returned or the fee(s)paid and will also not receive their report card.
