(Previous Edition) Parent Newsletter - October 2011

Dear Parents/Guardians and Students,

The Progress Report for school year 2010-2011 has been made public on the DOE website (www.schools.nyc.gov) and P.S. 123Q has received a grade of "C". This is disappointing news for all stakeholders. New York State Education Department raised the bar and we were not able to meet it. The entire staff is involved in reviewing last year's data in order to improve our students' weaknesses as well as improve our instructional practices. Your confidence and support in this school is paying off in a very positive manner. As we move forward, it is important that as parents and guardians, you continue to assist us in educating your children both intellectually and socially.

The school day begins at 8:10AM for Kindergarten through grade 5. We still have many students arriving late for school and wanting breakfast. All students are entitled to eat free during breakfast, but it is only served between 7:40AM and 8:05AM. At 8:05AM, all students must be in his or her proper line-up area. Our School Messenger system will automatically notify you if your child is absent or late. Dismissal times have changed for grades 3, 4, and 5. Monday through Wednesday dismissal is 3:07PM for the upper grades. Thursday and Friday dismissal is at 2:30PM for grades K-5.

Once again, we must collect lunch money from those of you who are required to pay. Please send in lunch money with your child at the beginning of the week. You should have received a letter stating your weekly payment. If you have any questions, please contact Ms Leone, the lunch coordinator.

As in past years, students in grades 3, 4, and 5 have to pass both the New York State ELA and NYS Math assessments in order to be promoted. The Fall Parent-Teacher Conferences will be held on Tuesday, November 15, 2011. Both the afternoon and evening conferences will be held on that day.

Teachers have begun to plan for class trips. Unfortunately, some trips have a fee. Please try to pay the fee by the due date set by the teachers. The school cannot absorb the fees for all students on every trip.

The school playground is supervised only during school hours. It becomes a community playground from 3:15pm until dusk on school days and all day on weekends and holidays. We do not supervise cchilden in the playground after dismissal. You must direct your child to go straight home after dismissal.

Our fourth annual "Storybook Character Day" will be on Friday, October 28th. On this day, we celebrate reading by dressing as our favorite storybook character. Please join us dressed as your favorite character and share a book with your child's class. On past occasions, we have had visits from Cinderella, Mary Poppins, Sleeping Beauty, Rapunzel, Harry Potter, the Mad Hatter, and many more.
