HiNi Virus (Swine Flu)

Mayor Bloomberg and Chancellor Klein announced at a press conference on September 1, 2009 that New York City Public Schools will not close due to any cases of the H1N1 virus that might occur in the schools.

It is more important than ever that contact information that you provide P.S. 236 is written on your child’s emergency contact cards and that it is accurate and up to date.  If your contact information should change during the year, it is vital that you inform the school of any changes.  There should be a minimum of three adults who can serve as contacts.  In the event that your child should become ill, we need to be able to reach you quickly.  Any child with a fever and a cough or sore throat should stay home until he/she is well and fever free for 24 hours.  Students do not need a doctor’s note to return to school after a flu illness.

If a student feels feverish at school, he/she should go to the nurse’s office and will be separated from others until a parent arrives.  Stress to your child the importance of washing hands often.  Children should avoid touching their nose and mouth and to cover their coughs and sneezes using a tissue or the inside of an arm.  It is important to notify the school nurse if your child has a chronic health condition.  Further information will go home in the near future concerning the vaccination program that was announced at the press conference and other updates.

Head Lice

Students who are suspected of having Head Lice will be checked by the nurse.  If the

student has Head Lice the parent will be contacted.  The student will not be allowed to attend school until the nurse re-checks the student and declares the Head Lice is gone.  Parents must take their child to the doctor and present a doctor’s note upon return.

Conjunctivitis/Pink Eye

Students who are suspected of having Conjunctivitis/Pink Eye will be checked by the nurse.  If the student has Conjunctivitis/Pink Eye the parent will be contacted.  The student will not be allowed to attend school until the nurse re-checks the student and declares the Conjunctivitis/Pink Eye is gone.  Parents must take their child to the doctor and present a doctor’s note upon return.

Administering Medication to children

Please note that school staff members are not permitted to administer medication of any kind to students during the school day.  Medication may only be administered if a 504 form is on file and then only the school nurse may administer the medication.  If you have questions regarding administration of medications to your child you may call or write a note to the school nurse.  504 forms can be obtained from the school nurse.

ASTHMA INHALERS

Student asthma inhalers are kept in the school nurse’s office only if a parent completes

a 504 form.  Students will then be able to visit the school nurse anytime they are in need of a treatment.  The nurse will be conducting an asthma workshop for students who are on record of having asthma.  It is very important to notify the school nurse and have a 504 form on file if your child has asthma.
