We welcome back members of our wonderful school community to P.S. 506 for the 2011-2012 school year. There are many activities planned for the school year and we will share them with a summary and pictures!
October
Halloween Assembly
The first assembly of October was the theatrical production entitled"The Wizard's Halloween Scavenger Hunt." It was directed by Ms. Rosenberg with choreography by Ms. Nicastro. The assembly presentation was a spooky Halloween story about students of a wizard school who set out to search for everything they would need for the perfect Halloween!
Thanks to Ms. Rosenberg, Ms. Nicastro and students of classes: 1-220, 2-212, 3-301, 3-303, 3-305, 3-306, 5-310, 5-312, 5-322, for a wonderful show!
Our PTA hosted a Harvest Parade for all students in grades Pre-K to 2. Students came dressed up as someone they admire or someone they would like to be when they grow up. Then, along with their teachers, students had a chance to follow a procession around the schoolyard to fun music.
Many thanks to the PTA for providing all students of grades Pre-K to 5 & staff with trick-a-treat goody bags.

Thanksgiving Feast
Our PTA hosted the Annual Thanksgiving Feast for our PS 506 school community. It was a great gathering of our wonderful students and families sharing in the multicultural celebration of giving thanks!
Many thanks to the PTA board and parents who donated food and desserts towards the wonderful event!
Thanksgiving Assembly
Classes from each grade level presented a performance to celebrate Thanksgiving. Songs filled the auditorium as K-105, 1-205, 2-216, sang about turkeys, food and being thankful. 3-309 shared a poem and original artwork as they wished PS 506 a Happy Thanksgiving. To end the show, 4-Lib A and 5-310 used their creativity and dramatic skills to write, as well as, act out original skits that shared messages of sharing, generosity, and being grateful.

Lutheran Medical Center Holiday Celebration
Our violin teacher, Mrs. Sophia Chertok & PS 506 student violinists, once again spread Holiday cheer.
They entertained hospital staff members, visitors & patients by performing classical & holiday musical compositions at the annual Lutheran Medical center Holiday Celebration!
Winter Assembly
Our Winter Holiday Celebration showcased our students' performing arts talents. This year our violin, drama and dance programs were organized into one assembly. The PS 506 student violinists performed various compositions as Night at the Opera, Elves Dance and Perpetual Motion. As well as, accompanied the singing and dancing performances of all classes, such as Jingle Bell Rock, Upon on the Housetop, March of Toy Soldiers, and Let it Snow!
Thank you to teachers and students of 2-307, 1-201, 2-212, K-219, 2-210, 2-216, 5-310. A special thanks to our performing arts teachers, Mrs. S. Chertok, Ms. L. Nicastro and Ms. H. Rosenberg. Also, to Mrs. M. Schiano for creating the beautiful stage scenery with students.

Chinese New Year & Dr. Martin King, Jr. Day Assembly
Kindergarten and 1st grade presented a song and dance share that celebrated Chinese New Year. All kindergarten and 1st grade classes participated in cultural dances, as well as, songs and skits that informed the audience about Chinese tradition.
Class 1-205 provided the audience with "Did you know?" facts about the holiday. Classes K-217, 1-201 and 2-214 concluded the show by singing about family, peace and friendship in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr, Day.

The 100th Day of School Celebration
On February 14th, administrators, teachers and students celebrated the 100th day of school. Students with their teachers had a chance to participate in many educational and fun learning activities for grades PK to 5. There were Art, Reading, Math, Writing, Social Studies, Physical Ed., & Science activities to celebrate the 100 days of learning in classrooms. In addition, there were math stations throughout the school with interactive activities that required students to apply their learned math skills to solve the questions.
From this point, we have 80+ days of school and there are so many more lessons to learn and activities and tests to complete in all subject Assembly

NED Assembly
Students attended the NED Assembly which is a school motivational program. It uses humor, storytelling and audience participation. With props like yo-yos and magic tricks students are taught how to develop and maintain valuable characteristics, to become champions in school and in life. The overall message the NED program represents is "never give up", "encourage others" and
"do your best." Thank you to our dance teacher, Ms. Nicastro for organizing the NED assembly. The children learned so much about the positive message they can apply to school and life!!
Annual Pi-Athlon
On March 30, our Fifth grade contestants participated in the annual school Pi-Athlon. An audience of fifth graders & their teachers were invited to watch the twelve fifth grade student finalists who participated in the competition. Students all prepared by memorizing the numbers of PI; It is an infinite & irrational number that is used to describe a perfect circle. Student contestants all showed great skills of concentration, memorization and recitation during the competition. We congratulate our PI-Athlon contestants for taking part in a "great challenge" and showing P.S. 506 school spirit!

"Poem in Your Pocket Day"
April is National Poetry Month. Since, reading, writing and interpreting poetry is one of the genres of literacy that our students enjoy learning about, our P.S. 506 school celebrated "Poem in Your Pocket Day" on April 26th. Administrators, teachers and students shared their favorite poems that were original works or poems cited from poets they admire. Several stylistic forms of poetry shared were, Acrostic, Cinquain, Limerick, Rhyme, Name, Lyric, Haiku, etc.
It was a wonderful day. Our students showed their great creativity and talent in writing, reading, and selecting their favorite poems as a wonderful form of expression!

Annual Spring Violin Assembly
Mrs. S. Chertok, our violin teacher, has taught our student violinists about musical history, theory and instrumental techniques. Her goal all year was to mold our students into young performers. Our Lower and Upper grade students of the P.S. 506 Violin Program, performed at our Annual Spring Violin Assembly on May 24th. The P.S. 506 audience had a chance to marvel at the classical and modern musical compositions that were performed after a year of learning and practice. An additional Violin Recital will take place in the evening of June 6th at 6:00 for students, parents and family friends.

Siemens Hands-On Science Day Program
Fourth & Fifth Grade students participated in the Hands-On Science Program on May 22, that was developed by the Siemens Corporation. Their mission is to promote the study of Science & to inform students of the many professional careers that require Science knowledge and skills.
Our P.S. 506 school community, would like to thank Mrs. C. Brereton & her daughter Mrs. L. Caldevilla, for forming our school partnership with the Siemens School-Outreach Program.The Siemens team presented engaging & fun enrichment activities that related to the application of Science in the real world setting & helped to build-upon what students have learned in the classroom setting. Thank You for"sparking" our students' interest in thinking about one day pursuinga Science-related career!
