Our mandated physical education program targets grades Kindergarten through Fifth Grade. The program implements academic integration strategies throughout the curriculum so that physical education can support and reinforce student achievement. Specifically, positive gains are linked between physical activity and academic performance, such as concentration, memory, classroom behavior and overall well being.
Our goal is for students to achieve and maintain a health-enhancing level of physical fitness for enjoyment, challenge, discipline, self-expression and social interaction throughout their lifetime.
Integrated into our physical education program is the NYC Fitnessgram Assessment which is implemented citywide in all NYC Public Schools. This program measures different parts of health related fitness, such as, body mass index, aerobic fitness, muscle strength, endurance, and flexibility. This report is sent to all of the parents upon completion. The finalized report will provide parents with their child’s current level of health related fitness and help them find ways to improve their fitness level if necessary.
Our Physical Education Program is affiliated with on going professional development, Physical BestTraining/Training of the NYC Fitnessgramand SPARK PE training(Sports , Play and Active Recreation for Kids). Also, included in our curriculum are the NYC Parks Department Junior Golf and TennisCenters, where our students get to participate in various clinics. Another rewarding experience is when our fifth gradersget to participate in the annual Bay Ridge Community Council Track and Field events in the Spring. We have also been fortunate enough to receive grants for equipment from the Nike Let Me Play Program which was created and designed to enhance physical activity of the PE Curriculum.
We are also very grateful to receive continuous support from the Office of Fitness and Health Education. Overall, our Physical Education classes are inclusive, active and fun for all students here at P.S. 506…”Healthy Bodies=Health Minds”
