The Photo and Print Journalism Program at P.S. 506

The Photo and Print Journalism Program at P.S. 506, involves teaching students from Kindergarten to Fifth grade. One component of the program, is that students learn the various steps in publishing  a newspaper. They learn about each job, as well as, all the sections of  a regular newspaper. Semi-annually, students create the  school newspaper "P.S. 506 Star Times,” which is  funded by our community sponsors and is printed by CM GRAPHX DESIGN. The newspapers are a compilation of writing  and publishing activities  that cover a broad selection of topics and activities throughout the year. For instance, our  student journalists conduct surveys, interviews and cover stories  or special events taking place around the school building. They also create comic strips and create games related to school topics.

Other components of the Photo and  Print Journalism Program, is the designing of creative and unique thematic art pieces by our students to be displayed throughout the school building. In addition, students participate in many art  events by showcasing their artwork  in different forums, such as,  art and photo contests for the Bay Ridge Community Council, P.S. Art 2009, the DOE Contests, and Studio in a School.
