The Theater Program at P.S. 506

The Theater Department at P.S. 506 School of Journalism and Technology is dedicated to creating an open learning space for students to explore dramatic tools that lead to original student-driven works, serve as an introduction to theater history and focus on developing self-esteem and confidence. The curriculum is fully aligned with the New York City Blueprint for Teaching and Learning in  the Arts(Theater).

Monthly assemblies are organized for all students to have the opportunity to develop their love of the arts and to discover their love of performing. These assemblies are completely run by a technical crew made up of students. The theatre department also organizes a range of programs for students and parents to stay involved with the arts.  To continue our outreach to parents and to help enhance their knowledge about the arts in their children’s lives, we host monthly grade-appropriate arts nights for parents and students to create art together.

During the  2007-2008 school year, the Theatre program received the Parents As Arts Partners grant from the Center For Arts Education.  We also received a supplementary grant from The Trust For Public Land, in partnership with the Center For Family Life. The grant sponsored an arts festival in our new schoolyard to promote “Keeping Our Trash Where It Belongs.”

The Theatre Department at P.S. 506, wants  all students to be enriched by the arts in a way that is long lasting through school into adulthood.
