The Mathematics Department at Fort Hamilton High School offers a variety of courses to accommodate the needs of students’ at all academic levels from Mathematics Literacy Classes to Advanced Placement Calculus.  Students who study here are well-served in preparing to meet the new requirements for high school graduation that were recently promulgated by New York State and are well-prepared for Integrated Algebra or Math A, and Math B exams.

It is important for parents and students to know that in order to graduate from high school in New York State, a student must complete six terms of mathematics and pass at least one academic level New York State Regents Examination (Math A).  Students who are college bound and wish to obtain the Advanced Regents diploma will have to pass two Regents Examinations (Integrated Algebra or Math A, and Math B).  In addition, college preparatory mathematics classes are offered to college bound students.

The Balanced Literacy initiative is incorporated into all of the courses offered by the Mathematics Department.  In order to receive a (complete) mathematics education, students should be able to approach everyday problems employing the skills of reading comprehension, writing and vocabulary as well as mathematics.

Our experience indicates that students who tend to do well in mathematics maintain excellent attendance, do their homework on time, ask questions in class when there is something that is not clear to them, and attend tutoring sessions in school when they feel they are floundering.  We are fortunate to have a number of free tutoring services available to students at Fort Hamilton High School.
