IS 30 Roadrunners: Under the direction of Ms. Athanasakos and Ms. Schnieder, the IS 30 Roadrunners is a running program that has had a tremendous impact on our school and school community. The students who are part of this team practice hard, compete hard and laugh hard. The program is a mix of cross-country practices with track and field activities. Our running team is in its sixth year and every year the love and enthusiasm for the sport grows. Our coaches and students were recognized this year by the Roadrunners organization and WNBC News to be an exemplary team. Coaches and runners had an opportunity to be interviewed for a segment on their accomplishments.
Weather Bug: Students of all ages have an interest in weather; it affects their day as well as their extra-curricula activities. Weather Bug Achieve® is a unique program that combines a fully automated Weather Tracking Station with online, standards-based learning to deliver a fascinating educational experience for our students. In addition to boosting test scores, Weather Bug’s affiliation with nearly 100 television stations means increased community awareness. Ms. Schneider, our program coordinator, has been monumental in terms of working with our students regarding the Weather Bug Program. Our students have the opportunity to get out of the text books and go online with an interactive tool delivering lessons to teach math, science, geography; all pulling in live data from the world's largest weather network. .
Kiwanis: The members of the Kiwanis Club at IS 30 view their role within their respective communities with a great deal of foresight. Under the leadership of Mr. Houston, the aspects that drive the members are evaluating both children’s issues and community needs on an ongoing basis and conducting service projects to respond to those identified needs. Club meetings traditionally are conducted once a month and offer an atmosphere of fun, learning, and fellowship.
Chess Club: Research shows, there is a strong correlation between learning to play chess and academic achievement. It's not about Kings, Queens, and Rooks, but rather, quadrants and coordinates, thinking strategically and foreseeing consequences. It's about lines and angles, weighing options and making decisions. Chess might just be the perfect teaching and learning tool for the students at IS 30. This year we have formed an after school Chess Club where students and their teachers are working together to promote the use of chess as an educational tool.
