Clase de Español

Plan de Estudios

This is a syllabus for the Spanish Year 1 Term course.  I have limited the outline to the homework, notebook check, test dates and the listening CD required for the class (I will provide the CD).  The length of each class period is an hour and 15 minutes (3:15-4:00 PM), this will allow time in every class for the four most important areas of language learning: speaking, listening, reading and writing.  The speaking parts will depend mostly on your participation and willingness to try the sounds of a new language, in this specific case, Spanish.  The listening will be from different resources, such as, the required CD for class, websites in Spanish language, podcasts in Spanish, children’s songs, Spanish music in a variety of genres and myself.  The reading will be mostly from the Spanish Textbook Somos Así: En sus marcas and Sandra Cisnero’s La casa en Mango Street (translated from English).  The writing will be original work from you derived from different topics in class, such as, writing postcards, composing children’s stories, poetry and songs.  All lessons will also include tidbits about Hispanic culture.  Homework will consist primarily of the structure of the Spanish language (grammar) and vocabulary acquisition.

Each month you will turn in a calendar including all the important dates for the month.  I will provide a template, you may be as creative as you wish, but you must at least comply with the minimum requirements.  I will model an example.  There is a final project due on April 30, 2009.  I will accept only an electronic copy created using PowerPoint.  Throughout May and June, you will have to present your projects to the class.  I have supplied a description of the project on the last page of this syllabus.  At the end of this course you should have a portfolio complete with all the activities, including quizzes/exams, that you have completed.

You have my email as listed above: la.profesora.medina@gmail.com. Please use it to contact me, if you have any question and to submit your project.  A copy of the syllabus will be posted on the school’s website www.BHSAonline.org and I hope to upload all of the homework assignments.  Caveat: homework will not be accepted for credit after it is reviewed in class, therefore do not hand it in late.  Yet, I expect to see all of the completed homework assignments in your portfolio whether or not you have received homework credit for it or not.

Extra-credit assignments will only be accepted if you have completed all of the required assignments: calendars, class work, homework; projects, quizzes/exams, etc. and are not satisfied with your grade.  Extra-credit may not be used to substitute the assignments required for this course.

Suggested materials for class: MP3 player/iPod; earphones; USB drive; one inch binder; folder; colored pens, pencils, or markers.
