PS 54 is an innovative pre K - 5 school honoring each child's individual gifts and learning style through a collaborative student/teacher community.

A small school, located in Bedford Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, we serve neighborhood children and their families providing general education and self-contained special education for children with special needs.

Our curriculum is standard-based, fostering the healthy growth and development of each child.  In the past year, the math scores of PS 54 students showed a marked increase.  PS 54 also scored high in its 2008-2009 Department of Education progress report, received an overall “A” rating:

  • School environment — B
  • Student performance — B
  • Student progress — A

At PS 54, every child has a voice.  We honor every child’s interests, talents, special gifts and learning styles in order tomeet his/her individual needs.

Collaborative team teaching allows teachers to work together under and across grade levels to maximum students’ educational experiences.

Some highlights of the PS 54 experience include:

  • Enrichment clusters — students are surveyed to determine their interests and learning styles, then matched with teachers for weekly.   Enrichment clusters are project-based with students doing research, followed by individual and small group projects that expand the learning experience.
  • Commitment to development of the whole child — in addition, to academics, PS 54 nurtures our students’ social and emotional needs and physical health.
  • A dual language program starting in kindergarten, which permits students to learn fluency in English and Spanish at an early age.
  • Early childhood learning environments that are print rich, interactive and provide a variety of opportunities for students to collaborate and explore all content areas.

  • Field trips, where students explore their and other neighborhoods around New York City, enriching and expanding their knowledge in all content areas.
  • A focus on science and technology.
  • Specialized services including speech, academic intervention, occupational and physical therapy, counseling and English as a Second Language.
  • A wide-range of enrichment activities — arts and crafts, dance, basketball, chess, swimming through YMCA and yoga.
  • The opportunity to participate in after school programs through the Bedford Stuyvesant YMCA and early morning health and physical activities facilitated by our gym teacher.
