Citizens Advice BureauFounded in 1972, the Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) is a Bronx-based settlement house. Its mission is to improve the economic and social well-being of individuals, families and communities who are most in need. The intent is to enable individuals to uncover their potential and improve their lives. To do this, CAB provides direct, hands-on help, community outreach, education, and advocacy, often in collaboration with other organizations. In all aspects of their work, CAB strives for the highest ethical and performance standards and is guided by the belief that people are to be treated with dignity and respect regardless of their present situation or past experiences. Some of the services provided by CAB include: Walk-In Assistance Centers:CAB's four Walk-In Assistance Centers allow people experiencing any kind of problem to meet with a counselor and gain assistance. Staff are skilled professionals with knowledge of housing, immigration, tenant and consumer rights, senior services and community resources. Each year, the walk-in centers help more than 4,500 residents handle a wide variety of issues.HomeBase:HomeBase is a unique eviction prevention program that serves the residents of Bronx Community Board 1 (made up of the Mott Haven, Melrose and Port Morris neighborhoods).Homelessness Prevention & Relocation Support Services:CAB's Homelessness Prevention & Relocation Support Services program works to prevent holders of Section 8 vouchers from losing their rent subsidies and being evicted.Aftercare Services:CAB works with formerly homeless families after they find permanent housing in order to help prevent them returning to the shelter system.Family Childcare Provider Program:The Family Childcare Provider Program helps women start home-based childcare businesses and also provides technical assistance to caregivers who already operate established businesses. Child and Family Health Plus Outreach:CAB staff help residents enroll in New York State's insurance program for families without health coverage. Child and Family Health Plus are New York State's health insurance programs for adults and children who do not have health insurance, either of their own or through their employer, but have incomes too high to apply for Medicaid. Child Health Plus provides coverage for children up to age 18. Family Health Plus covers single adults, couples without children and parents ages 19 to 64. Coverage includes prevention, primary care, hospitalization, prescriptions and other services.Food Stamp Outreach Program:The Food Stamp Outreach Program is a hunger prevention initiative designed to assist the many Bronx residents who are eligible for food stamps but have never applied. Outreach specialists go out daily to various locations to find potential candidates for food stamps. They prescreen people for eligibility and facilitate the application process.
