Guidance

At Washington Irving, counselors assist students in a variety of ways. House counselors create a program for each student and discuss with each student his/her progress towards meeting the requirements for graduation.

Counselors perform more than a clerical function. Counselors are trained professionals who understand the human growth and development of students and are experienced in dealing with many of the social and emotional issues that an adolescent may be facing. Counselors conduct group and individual counseling for the students in their house, deal with such issues as abuse, suicide, homelessness, bereavement and attend all suspension conferences. Teachers are encouraged to consult with the counselor if they feel that a student can benefit from counseling services. Counselors assist in daily mandated counseling regarding behavior issues.

College Advisor

The college advisor assists students in making college and career choices. The college advisor’s office (Room 220) assists students with financial aid forms and college applications. The office disseminates information regarding SAT and PSAT exams, CUNY and SUNY guidebooks, invites representatives from various colleges, conducts an annual college fair in the spring and plans the senior awards ceremony.

Deans

Each house has its own dean who is part of the house team. Students are referred to the dean for violating the student Code of Conduct or committing acts that present a clear and present danger to themselves, another student or staff. Deans gather information, contact parents and hold parental conferences in concert with the team. The principal is then given the facts and makes the decision whether or not to suspend. The deans prepare and participate in principal and superintendent’s suspension conferences.

E.R.S.S.

Three social workers at Washington Irving offer counseling for regular education students based on referrals by guidance counselors and teachers. Students who have experienced a traumatic event or who exhibit behavior changes that you feel need attention should be referred.

Family Paras

Family paras have tasks and a schedule defined by the house and assistant principal and the other A.P. Administrations. Be aware that your request may conflict with an already structured day.

HIV/AIDS Education (SHAR)

Students can receive information regarding the HIV virus, AIDS prevention and, if they wish, a condom, from the members of the AIDS team. Lists of the members are posted throughout the building and in house offices.

Pregnancy Counseling and Prevention

Students who may be pregnant can be referred for counseling and outside referral through the guidance staff. There is also a pregnancy peer-counseling program.

Program Office

Each student is given an individual program card which lists the student’s classes, teachers and room numbers. Only the Program Office, in consultation with the appropriate guidance counselor, is authorized to make changes on the program card. Guidance counselors and academic advisors are responsible for student programs. Do not send students to the Program Office.

SPARK

The SPARK program provides individual assistance and referrals and family assistance related to drug abuse.
