The supplemental educational services (SES) provision offers providers an opportunity to offer low-income children, who may be struggling in school, extra academic help and individual instruction. Through SES, innovative leaders and educators can start a new tutoring program or expand an existing one to serve more students.
An approved supplemental educational services provider must meet specified criteria for providing services in English language arts (including reading), and/or mathematics in order to help students achieve New York’s learning standards. Entities eligible to apply to provide supplemental educational services may include, but are not limited to: community based organizations, charter schools, private schools, public schools, libraries, private companies, institutions of higher education, family literacy programs/Even Start programs, Boards of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES), and faith-based organizations.
Approved providers must offer students extra academic help anytime outside of the regular school day. After school is the most common time for SES to be offered, but it could also take place before school, on weekends, or during the summer. SES can be offered in the school building, at a service center, community-based service site, in a student’s home or over the internet.
