The No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) was signed into law in 2001. Like our Children First reforms, its goal is to raise academic standards, close achievement gaps, encourage more school accountability, and offer more choices to families and students.

A key part of the law allows students in “schools in need of improvement” for two years to transfer to another school. Students in “schools in need of improvement” for three years may receive free additional tutoring (supplemental education services).
