School Resources

Public, non-public and pre-K school personnel and administration can use the links below and in the Key Documents section to access applications, forms and Office of Pupil Transportation (OPT) policy and procedure information.

Search School and Student Information

Schools can use the OPT School and Student Transportation Search  to search for school and student information.

  • Choose the School Transportation Information search to see a school's session times, yellow bus and MetroCard information.
  •  Choose the Student Transportation Information search to see a student's information. You will need to enter the student's 9-digit student ID number and date of birth in order to view this information. For a general education student, you can see information that includes session times, scheduled morning pick-up and afternoon drop-off times, bus stop locations and bus company information. For a special education student you can see session times, route number and bus company information.

Calendars

View the  NYC public schools calendar.

View the non-public schools calendar.

Non-public school administrators can log in to the non-public schools calendar system to edit their school's information. Schools must keep calendar information up-to-date so that OPT knows when to provide busing  for the students.

ATS and NPSIS Transportation Information

OPT depends on accurate data to provide services to students and schools. Automate the Schools (ATS) and Non-Public Schools Information System (NPSIS) data is used by both schools and OPT to manage transportation services for students.

Click the links below to access information to assist you in managing several key functions performed regularly in schools:

NPSIS MetroCard Practices and Procedures

ATS and NPSIS workshops for school staff are held at OPT headquarters in Long Island City. The workshops are structured to assist anyone assigned to handle transportation issues in their school.

Information Schools Can Provide to Parents
School staff can access forms to give to parents, including medical, hazard, access and emergency variance forms, in the Key Documents section.  Schools and parents need to provide complete information when requesting a variance to student eligibility requirements. Please be sure to complete the school information section, including OPT school code and principal’s signature.

Translations of some information for parents is also available in Arabic, Bengali, Chinese, Haitian Creole, Korean, Russian, Spanish and Urdu.

Conduct on School Buses
The school bus student incident report is designed to assist school bus drivers and escorts in reporting issues of student misconduct. In the event of an incident, the bus driver or escort will provide a copy of the report, with a specific control number, to the school of the student concerned. The school enters the complaint into the Online Occurrence Reporting System (OORS). The bus company keeps a copy for their records and the last two copies are forwarded to OPT. One of the copies is forwarded to OORS and the other is forwarded to Corporation Counsel. OPT maintains a hard copy.

Pedestrian Safety Around the School
Student and street safety are primarily the responsibility of the Department of Education’s Office of School Safety, the New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) and the New York City Police Department (NYPD).  In order to promote safe walking to schools, the Department of Transportation's  Safe Routes to Schools program features a school safety map for each elementary and intermediate school having an enrollment of 250 students or more. Each map shows the roadway network, school locations and traffic safety infrastructure, including designated school crosswalks where school children are recommended to cross.

School crossing guards are provided by the NYPD.  Principals who would like crossing guards should contact the commanding officer of their local precinct and ask if the precinct can provide a guard. The DOE asks that principals please understand that it is difficult for the NYPD to provide as many guards as a requested each year and also, more generally, to understand that crossing guards are trained only to help children cross the street and are not able to assist schools with other matters like directing traffic and issuing tickets.

Walking to School
While OPT is charged with providing transportation by yellow bus and public transit for all students in New York City, we support the City’s initiative to have as many children walk to school as possible.  OPT and the New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) would be happy to help schools design walking programs to their school. More information, resource guides and promotional materials are available from NYC's Department of Transportation. Another good site with information about walking to school is the New Zealand Department of Transportation. If you would like more information about promoting walking to school, including the creation of a Walking School Bus, please contact your school’s Transportation Account Manager or OPT.
