  • The Office for Family Engagement and Advocacy (OFEA) is offering sessions under the Saturday Parent Academy (SPA) on a variety of topics to train parent leaders in various volunteer responsibilities.  Whether you are already active in your school community or considering becoming involved, we invite you to join OFEA and learn more about the dynamic potential of school involvement
  • The Parental Involvement Pledge has two components. It provides an opportunity for parents to formalize their commitment to working with their child's school through a written agreement they can complete and take to their parent leader, school secretary, teacher, or principal. The Pledge also provides a survey of parent volunteer interests. The survey identifies 37 areas in which parents can volunteer in school, outside the classroom and at home.
  • Open School Week is scheduled to be held during the week of November 16 through November 22.  'Great Public Schools: A Basic Right and our Responsibility" will be the theme of the week-long celebration, which is being promoted with the vision of forging new and reinforcing strong existing parent-school relations across New York City.

    ABC News reports on an informative new resource, Great Expectations,  made available to our NYC public school parents. The booklet has been designed to help parents track their children's progress in school and become an active partner with the Department of Education in their childrens' education. 
  • The Korea Times interviewed Chancellor Joel I. Klein on August 16 at the NYC Back to School Kick-Off in Central Park.  During the interview, the Chancellor expressed his concern over the low participation rate of Asian parents, including Korean parents, at educational events and programs across the city.  He spoke of the need for these parents who are motivating and supporting their high-achieving children at home to channel their enthusiasm and dedication into school and DOE sponsored events
  • The Korea Times had an exclusive with Chief Family Engagement Officer Martine Guerrier on August 14, 2008, during which Ms. Guerrier discusses the importance of parent involvement in the NYC public schools and the various resources available through her office (OFEA) to help immigrant and non-English speaking parents and guardians play active roles in their children’s education.  
  • The Office for Family Engagement & Advocacy held its first annual Family Back to School Kickoff at Central Park on August 16 2008.   The eventful and informative day was punctuated with student performances, arts and crafts, and special guest appearances including Chancellor Joel I. Klein and a video message from Mayor Michael Bloomberg commemorating the inaugural event.  NY1 was there to cover the event.

  • OFEA launched a new series of Native Language Forums, so families can learn about important DOE policies and programs in their home languages. These sessions began in the fall of 2008 and are scheduled through the end of the school year. To learn more, please contact 212-374-2323
  • This section has been assembled to inform NYC public school parents about the guidelines pertaining to the exclusion of students from Prom or Graduation Ceremonies.   In the following document, parents will find out under what circumstances students will not be allowed to attend Prom or Graduation, the responsibilities of both the students and the school authorities at such ceremonies and events, what role the parents themselves have to play in ensuring safe and successful conduction of these ceremonies, and so on.
