Assistive

The D75 Assistive Technology Evaluation Unit serves to evaluate students within our programs for use with assistive technology devices. In addition, students can be evaluated for physical access to these devices, to classroom computers, and to instructional materials.

The program provides professionally trained, trans-disciplinary teams to evaluate students in need of assistive and adaptive technology, which may can consist of augmentative and alternative communication devices, computers, software, and/or access equipment such as switches, joysticks, head mice, adapted keyboards, etc.

The evaluations typically take place in the school environment; students on Home Instruction are seen in their home. Parents are invited by the school to attend these evaluations. The participation of staff and family members in these evaluations, as well as their close involvement in the implementation of the assistive technology, is paramount to the success of the recommendation and the integration of the device/s in the educational curriculum.

In District 75, school staff submit an assistive technology referral through SESIS. Once the referral is reviewed, an evaluator will contact the school staff to discuss the information submitted and to schedule a date for an assistive technology evaluation. In the event that school staff have experience in assistive technology and express confidence about a specific recommendation, the evaluator will guide the school staff through the next steps to be taken.

Assistive Technology referrals in SESIS that are found to contain information which are not in conjunction with the guidelines for the provision of Assistive Technology will be disapproved.
