Applied Learning

Applied Learning focuses on the skill set students will require to become productive members of society, as individuals who apply the knowledge gained in school and elsewhere to analyze problems and propose solutions, to communicate effectively and coordinate action with others, and to use the tools of the information age workplace. It connects the work students have done in school with the demands of the 21st century community-at-large.

There are five performance standards for Applied Learning:

  • Problem Solving;
  • Communication Tools and Techniques;
  • Information Tools and Techniques;
  • Learning and Self-management Tools and Techniques; and
  • Tools and Techniques for Working with Others.

District 75 currently has the following Applied Learning initiatives that engage students in authentic, practical, project-based cooperative learning:

Debate- Students in District 75 use research, analytical and performance skills to debate both in-person and online via live webcast with their peers throughout New York City. Through the use of videoconferencing technology, students compete with other teams from around the 5 boroughs without leaving their classroom. After three rounds of online competition, teams come together in June for a heated day of face-to-face debates to determine the D75 champions.

3-D Worlds - District 75 students work in a three-dimensional, virtual world designed for the learning and practice of social, communication, and life skills: from independent city travel, to banking and financial decision making, to setting up one’s first apartment and hosting a party. Students interact with one another via text and voice chat using avatars that they customize to represent themselves.

Girls Club - Girls Club provides an online forum for girls in District 75 programs throughout the five boroughs to connect with their peers, get accurate information, and discuss important issues. It encourages a sense of community and belonging while fostering confidence and self-esteem in an effort to inspire and enable young women to reach their full potential.

SSAC - The District 75 Superintendent's Student Advisory Council (SSAC) is comprised of student council leaders from high schools throughout the district. Through monthly meetings during the school year, the representatives serve as the schools' liasons to the superintendent and as a voice for all students in District 75. They come together to exchange information and ideas and to work on issues that will have a positive effect in their schools.
