It's a Great Time To Be a New York City Principal! Apply now. Applications for the Principal Candidate Pool are accepted year-round.
All applicants for principalships in New York City schools are required to first enter the Principal Candidate Pool. Applicants are accepted into the Pool based on a rigorous selection process that discerns readiness for the principalship in the DOE’s five School Leadership Competencies:
- Personal Leadership in Fostering a Culture of Excellence
- Use of Data
- Deep Knowledge of Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment
- Staff Development and Sharing of School Leadership
- Resource Management
Written applications, evidence of the strength of preparation and achievements as presented in resumes, and applicants’ skills as demonstrated through in-person evaluations provide opportunities during the Pool selection process for applicants to manifest their development of the Competencies. All applicants must provide three professional references. For applicants who are currently employed with the NYC Department of Education, the Office of School Leadership will contact your current supervisor. Please contact our office at the e-mail address below if you have any questions or concerns.
Candidates who have earned entry into the Pool will have the opportunity to apply for specific posted principal positions. Selection for school appointments will be done in accordance with Chancellor’s Regulation C-30. All currently appointed New York City Schools principals are automatically placed in the Pool.
Please note: All current DOE employees who tested onto principal eligibility lists under the Board of Examiners before 1990 will also be placed in the Pool.
Applicants who seek the challenges and rewards of leadership of a New York City school are encouraged to apply. Click to access the application and begin the process for acceptance into the Principal Candidate Pool.
