Food and Finance High School students preparing one of the more popular tastes of the evening, Apple Waldorf Salad.
Culinary students cooked up a taste of the Big Apple this past week for public school families across the five boroughs. The teens from Food and Finance High School hosted the first annual “Taste of the Big Apple” event to promote healthy eating and the diverse flavors of New York City. Hundreds of guests sampled butternut squash soup, Apple Waldorf Salad, spinach quesadillas, and hydroponically-grown vegetables whipped up by Food and Finance students.
“I really enjoyed the experience,” said attendee Chenelle Lloyd, a senior at the High School for Public Service. “There were so many rooms and activities there so you had no reason to be bored or not involved with what was going on. If there was ever another event like this one I would definitely go back!”
The event also featured a hip-hip program, a raffle, and presentations by local community groups. Milagros Batista, chef and co-director of Alianza Dominicana, conducted a workshop about Latino culinary traditions and healthy eating habits. The event was organized by the DOE’s Office for Family Engagement and Advocacy and the Office of School Food.
