PS 140 eighth grader Javier Mota points out his piece in the school's gallery
Many City students take their artwork home to be displayed on their kitchen refrigerators. But at PS 140 in Manhattan, student artwork is displayed in the school’s very own art gallery.
For the third year, students’ drawings, paintings, and photographs of the school’s Lower East Side neighborhood have been professionally framed and showcased in a special gallery space near the school’s lobby.
A celebratory gallery “opening” was held on June 18. The exhibit will be open to the school community until next spring when it will be replaced by another student show.
Eighth grade artist Frank Angelos was proud to have his abstract print, made at a one-day workshop at a local print shop, featured in the exhibition.
“For this piece, I got some ideas from my favorite artist, Keith Haring,” he explained. “I also included the Dominican and Puerto Rican flags because my parents are from each of those places.”
Photographs of the Lower East Side are also on display in the gallery.
“My photo represents everything about who I am because I grew up here,” eighth grader Devan Lopez said, pointing to her shot of a neighborhood street.
The gallery brightens up the school and the moods of the student artists.
“The kids have just been beaming,” assistant principal Carmen Fulford said. “It is very important to them that we are exhibiting their work.”
