American Girl & Fisher Price Transform Brooklyn Library
| Share |

On September 22, representatives from American Girl and Fisher Price joined the principal, librarian, students, and other members from the community at PS 178 in Brooklyn for a special ribbon cutting ceremony to unveil the school’s newly refurbished library. American Girl and Fisher Price, on behalf of the Mattel Children’s Foundation, awarded a Mattel Community Partner Grant to the school through The Fund for Public School’s Library REACH (Revitalizing Education for Adolescents and Children) program.

PS 178 is located in Brooklyn’s Crown Heights neighborhood and serves over 600 students in pre-Kindergarten through eighth grade. The $20,000 grant transformed the library into a vibrant and inviting space for the students. Thanks to this generous donation, the library is now equipped with a brand new interactive SMART Board for projecting websites and teaching digital literacy skills, as well as new books guaranteed to engage students in reading and spark inquiry and imagination. In addition, volunteers from American Girl and Fisher Price joined forces with the students to collaboratively design several enhancements for the library, including creating decorative murals and tiles for the walls. Investing in this part of the school sends a clear message to the entire community: the library is a valuable resource for hooking students into reading, developing literacy skills, and propelling their achievement.

At the ribbon cutting ceremony, students, school staff, and representatives and volunteers from American Girl and Fisher Price shared their reflections of working together on the project. The ceremony was followed by a special book fair where students were allowed to select a book to take home from a collection of donated books provided by American Girl and Fisher Price and The Fund for Public Schools. This library is an inspiring example of how public-private partnerships are making a real difference in New York City’s public schools, and these refurbishments will be enjoyed by the school community for years to come.
