Fathers and role models of students at Academy for Social Action attend a breakfast in their honor
The Academy for Social Action in Manhattan celebrated Fathers Day this past week by asking students to invite their dads or father figures to a special breakfast.
The school's parent coordinator, Robert Williams, organized the event to stress the importance for students, especially boys, of having a male role model in their lives
"I grew up without a father in my home and a lot of my students do not have a father at home," Williams said. "It's important for men to know what's going on in their children's school and to be involved."
The breakfast featured several guest speakers, including Ed Gordon, a journalist for Black Entertainment Television.
"This event was very informative and made you open your eyes about being a good parent," said Mr. Campbell, a role model for one of the school's students.
"I was very pleased to see so many dads attend," a father, Mr. Lynch, said. "Maybe this can be a start of lowering the percentage of absent fathers in the household."
