February 25, 2009
Dear Parents/Guardians,
The January unit was both exciting and educational as it provided an in depth study of the events leading to the sinking of the Titanic as well as learning about animals living in the arctic region.
The unit provided multi sensory and inquiry based learning to encourage problem solving, critical thinking and opportunities to work as part of a collaborative team. The interdisciplinary unit created activities to reflect New York State Standards as well as addressed individual learning goals. Instructional materials supported the curriculum and provided purposeful tools to promote active student participation.
On January 20, 2009, students were afforded the opportunity to witness the televised election of Senator Obama as he became the first African American President of the United States. This historic moment was an unforgettable learning experience for everyone involved.
February's thematic unit celebrated the many accomplishments of Black Americans in the areas of politics, music and sports. Projects included recreating authentic work reflective of different events. As concerned citizens students worked on various projects in their effort to "Go Green."
The up coming March unit will focus on weather and its impact on living conditions both locally and globally. In addition, students will learn about women in history and their noted accomplishments.
Please take a moment to see the students engaged in learning by viewing the many pictures available on this web site.
