Progress Report

Contents

Progress Reports help parents, teachers, principals, and school communities understand schools' strengths and weaknesses. Progress Reports grade each school with an A, B, C, D, or F and are based student progress (60%), student performance (25%), and school environment (15%). Scores are based on comparing results from one school to a peer group of up to 40 schools with the most similar student population and to all schools citywide.

Find a School’s Progress Report

You can find a school’s latest Progress Report by entering the school name or number.

Progress Reports for the last three years and a Progress Report Overview for 2009-10 are also available. The Progress Report Overview is designed for students’ families. The Overview summarizes the Progress Report categories and overall results, answers frequently asked questions, and provides resources for further information. To find these, search for the school in the main school search tool, then click on the “statistics and budget” page.

Progress Report Citywide Results

Spreadsheets with citywide results from previously released Progress Reports can be found in the table below. There is also a multi-year summary that covers all five years of the Progress Report in a single sheet.

2006-07 was the first year of the Progress Report. School performance data for years before then (back to 1998-99) can be found on the New York State school report card website (look for the "school report card database" - not the reports themselves which are mostly missing).

Methods and Documentation

The methods of the Progress Report are described in the Educator’s Guide to the Progress Report. If you have additional questions, you can contact PR_Support@schools.nyc.gov.

Progress Report Changes

The Progress Report is reviewed and revised each year.   We follow a four-step process to approve any changes to the Progress Report:

Step 1: Release “proposed changes” document

Step 2: Collect feedback from stakeholders on the proposed changes

Step 3: Release “final changes” and "responses to feedback"

Step 4: Publish new reports and Educator’s Guides

Responses to feedback. This document summarizes and responds to the major points of feedback we received from approximately 1,200 principals, network staff and school staff on the 2011-2012 Progress Report and proposed changes.

High School Preparatory Course Certification Pilot

The High School Preparatory Course Certification (HSPCC) pilot seeks to recognize middle school courses that build high school readiness skills and expand the range of courses for which schools can earn credit on the middle school Progress Report High School Readiness metrics. Schools are invited to submit applications from April 5, 2012 through May 11, 2012.

Principals should contact us with any questions about the process.

The below information can be used to help middle schools assess and improve the rigor of their courses. The materials also provide guidance on how courses will be evaluated as part of HSPCC.
