Parent Resources

Research shows that when families are engaged in a child's education, especially where learning is extended at home, children do better.

Below are some resources for families to support their child's learning at home.

Pre-K & Other Early Childhood Program Information

Pre-kindergarten Foundation for the Common Core
On October 17, 2011, the New York State (NYS) Board of Regents approved the NYS Pre-kindergarten Foundation for the Common Core .

"The primary purpose of the pre-k standards is to ensure that all children, including children with disabilities, students with Limited English Proficiency (LEP), and English Language Learners (ELLs) have rich and varied early learning experiences that prepare them for success in school and lay the foundation for college and career readiness" (page 5 of the standards found  here ).

The Early Screening Inventory-Revised (ESI-R) Screening
All Univeral Pre-kindergarten (UPK) programs are required to adopt a standardized screening tool that assists educators in learning more about the various aspects of a child's development such as language, cognition, perception, and motor development.  Most UPK programs use the Early Screening Inventory-Revised (ESI-R) as their screening tool.

The screening does not determine whether your child is eligible for pre-kindergarten or kindergarten, nor is it a test of IQ, school readiness or acceptance into the Gifted and Talented program.
